How much flooring should you buy?
Your measured floor area is not necessarily the amount of flooring to purchase. Cuts, layout, room size, product dimensions and installation pattern can require additional material.

Measuring an irregular room
For many L-shaped or irregular flooring areas, divide the floor into simple rectangles, measure each rectangle separately, then add the sections together.
FloorGauge calculators provide planning measurements based on the dimensions you enter. Verify measurements and product requirements before purchasing flooring. Actual material requirements may vary based on room layout, installation pattern, product dimensions and manufacturer recommendations.
How to measure a flooring project
A rectangular room
Measure the longest wall for length and the adjoining wall for width, at floor level rather than at counter height. Record feet and inches, then let the calculator convert the inches for you.
An L-shaped room
Split the floor into simple rectangles, measure each rectangle on its own, and enter them as separate sections. The calculator adds them together.
Multiple rooms
Add a section for every space receiving flooring, and name them so the breakdown stays readable. Closets, pantries, hallways, alcoves and entries are easy to miss and are never added automatically.
Cabinets, islands and built-ins
Whether flooring runs beneath permanent fixtures depends on the project. If it will not, subtract those areas using the optional subtraction tool rather than guessing.
Measured area vs. flooring to purchase
Measured floor area is what gets covered. The quantity you buy is usually larger, because cuts, layout, product dimensions and installation pattern all consume material. Choose that allowance deliberately.
