How to Prepare a Concrete Floor for Flooring

A slab is prepared by finding out what is actually there — surface condition, cracks and joints, flatness, moisture — and then correcting only the conditions that your flooring system cannot accept.

The short answer

Expose the slab, clean it thoroughly, inspect the surface, look at cracks and joints separately, check flatness with a straightedge, mark the high and low areas, find out what moisture evaluation your flooring system requires, correct what needs correcting, clean again and recheck before anything is installed.

Not every slab needs every step. A clean, sound, flat slab that meets the flooring system's requirements may need very little. The point of the sequence is to find that out rather than assume it.

The order the work happens in

  1. Expose the concrete and evaluate what you can now see.
  2. Remove debris, dust and surface contamination.
  3. Inspect the slab surface across the whole area, not just where you are standing.
  4. Identify cracks, control joints and damaged areas, and tell them apart.
  5. Check flatness with a straightedge in several directions.
  6. Mark high and low areas as you find them.
  7. Find out what moisture evaluation the flooring system calls for.
  8. Decide which corrections actually fit the conditions you found.
  9. Carry out grinding, patching or leveling where appropriate.
  10. Clean again — prep work leaves dust and residue behind.
  11. Recheck flatness and the corrected areas.
  12. Confirm the flooring system's substrate requirements before installing.

One slab can present several different conditions at once. A crack and an intentional control joint are not automatically the same thing, and a high spot and a low area call for different corrections.
What to look at, and what each condition affects

Most of these are ordinary surface observations that anyone can make. A few are not: widening cracks, slab movement, large damaged areas, hollow or unstable concrete, or anything that suggests a structural cause deserves an on-site evaluation by someone qualified to look at it. Old adhesive and unknown residue

Where residue has been identified and can be safely addressed, the method still depends on what is going over it. Some adhesives and prep products accept a well-bonded residue; others require it removed. That decision belongs to the product data sheets, not to a general rule.

Cracks and joints are not the same condition

A control joint is a deliberate line, cut or formed so the slab cracks where it was planned to. A random crack is not planned. Filling every visible line on a slab because it looks like a defect is not automatically correct — a joint that is meant to move may need to keep moving, or may need a specific treatment named by the flooring system.

  • Establish whether the line is an intentional joint or a crack before deciding anything.
  • Consider whether there are signs of movement, differential height across the line, or an ongoing cause.
  • Check what the flooring manufacturer says about joints and cracks under their product.
  • Check what the repair or prep product you are considering is approved to do.
  • Treat an active or structural crack as a condition to investigate, not a line to fill.

There is no universal crack-repair method here, because the correct treatment varies with the flooring system, the prep product and the behavior of the slab itself.

Flatness on a slab

A slab does not necessarily need to be perfectly level to accept flooring, but it does need to meet the substrate tolerance your flooring system requires. Those are two different measurements, and the distinction is worth reading in full in flatness vs. level.

FloorGauge does not publish a flatness tolerance. The number differs by product and installation method, and the flooring manufacturer's instructions are what you check it against.

Before you install over the slab

  • The slab is clean, and clean again after any prep work created dust.
  • Corrected areas have been rechecked with a straightedge, not just looked at.
  • Any moisture evaluation the flooring system requires has actually been done.
  • The prep materials used are ones the flooring manufacturer accepts beneath their product.
  • Finished height still works at doors, appliances, stairs and transitions.
