Can You Install LVP Over Existing Flooring?
Sometimes. It depends on what the existing floor is, what condition it is in, what your LVP manufacturer approves as a substrate, how much height you can afford to add, and whether the old surface actually makes a suitable base.
How to think about it
Installing over an existing floor turns that floor into your substrate. Everything it does — move, flex, telegraph a seam, hold moisture — becomes something the new floor has to live with. So the question is not whether it is possible in general, but whether this specific surface behaves like a substrate your product accepts.
Two things settle most cases: the approved-substrate list in your installation instructions, and an honest assessment of the existing floor's condition.
Floor by floor
The table below is a set of conditions to evaluate, not a list of approved substrates. Any of these can be acceptable or unacceptable depending on the product and the condition of the floor in front of you.

| Hardwood | How securely it is fastened, squeaks and movement, cupping or crowning, board gaps, finish condition, and total height added. |
| Engineered wood | Whether it is glued, nailed or floating, its stability, and its surface flatness including bevels. |
| Tile | Stability, loose or cracked tiles, grout joint depth and width, overall flatness, and the substantial height change it usually creates. |
| Carpet and soft flooring | Generally not a substrate — see below. |
Carpet
LVP generally should not simply be installed over ordinary carpet and pad unless a specific flooring system explicitly permits that substrate. Carpet and pad are deliberately compressible, and locking systems are engineered against a firm, stable base.
On a soft substrate the floor deflects under foot traffic and point loads, which works the joints continuously. Over time that shows up as joint separation, lock failure, a floor that feels unstable, and often a denied warranty claim. Tack strip around the perimeter adds its own height and hard edges.
Tile
Tile is often mechanically fine as a base — it is hard, stable and does not compress — but it brings flatness and height questions with it.
- Tap for hollow or loose tiles and check for cracks; anything loose or moving needs addressing first.
- Check overall flatness across the tiled area with a straightedge, not tile to tile.
- Assess grout joints for depth and width relative to what your product requires.
- Add up the height change — tile is usually the thickest floor people leave in place.
- Check door clearance, appliance clearance and how transitions will land.
- Confirm your manufacturer approves an existing tile substrate at all.
Grout joints do not automatically require filling. Whether they do depends on their width and depth, the flooring product's requirements and the condition of the floor overall. Wide or deep joints under a rigid plank can leave unsupported spans; shallow, narrow joints often do not. Before you install over the old floor, check what gets higher
This is the part most often skipped, and the most expensive one to discover late. Every layer you keep raises the finished floor, and the finished floor touches more things than people expect.

| Exterior doors and sliders | These often cannot be trimmed or rehung easily, and thresholds and weather seals are involved. |
| Appliances | Whether a range, refrigerator or washer still slides in and out of its opening. |
| Dishwasher | The usual casualty: height under the countertop is fixed and a raised floor can trap it permanently. |
| Toilets, where relevant | A raised floor changes the relationship to the flange, which is a plumbing consideration rather than a flooring one. |
| Cabinets and toe kicks | Whether the floor now runs into the toe kick, and whether cabinet-adjacent clearance is still available. |
| Stairs | The top and bottom riser heights change, which matters for safety and code. |
| Adjacent floors and transitions | Whether a profile exists for the new height difference, and whether it creates a trip point. |
| Baseboard and trim | Whether trim still reads correctly in height, and whether it will cover the required clearance. |
When removing the existing floor may be the better choice
Removal is not automatically necessary, and it is real cost and real work. But in some conditions it produces a substantially better base, and it is worth pricing rather than avoiding.
- The existing floor is loose, lifting or moving underfoot.
- There is enough unevenness that prep over the top would be extensive anyway.
- There are moisture concerns you cannot evaluate without seeing the substrate.
- The existing surface is not an approved substrate for your product.
- The added height causes problems at doors, appliances, stairs or transitions.
- You suspect damage beneath that ought to be inspected before being covered.

If you do install over the existing floor
- Confirm in writing — in the installation instructions — that the substrate is approved.
- Clean the existing surface thoroughly and secure anything loose.
- Check flatness across the whole area with a straightedge and correct what fails.
- Verify any moisture requirement for the assembly beneath, not just the visible surface.
- Recalculate finished height and confirm every clearance listed above.
- Plan transitions for the new height difference before the first row goes down.
