How to Install LVP Flooring

Most LVP installations are straightforward. The ones that go wrong usually went wrong before the first plank was clicked in — at the substrate, or in the row layout. This guide walks the job in the order it actually happens.

Before you start: read the product's instructions

LVP is a category, not a single product. Core type, locking system, thickness and attached pad all vary, and so do the requirements that come with them. Acclimation, flatness tolerance, expansion gap, maximum run length without a transition, approved substrates and underlayment rules are set by the manufacturer of the flooring you bought — not by a general rule you read online, including this page.

Find the installation instructions for your exact product before you plan anything else. Where this guide and your instructions disagree, your instructions win.

1. Plan the project

Work out how much flooring you need, in whole cartons, and where each room starts and stops. Decide the plank direction, where transitions will land, and what happens at doorways into other flooring.

  • Measure each room, closet and hallway separately and total the area.
  • Add a waste allowance you choose based on room shape, layout and cut complexity.
  • Convert the total into whole cartons using your carton's stated coverage.
  • Buy all cartons from the same production lot where possible, and check the lot numbers when the material arrives.
  • Decide plank direction and where each room's flooring will end.
  • Confirm what tools you need: tapping block, pull bar, spacers, jamb saw, straightedge, utility knife or saw.

2. Acclimation — only if the instructions require it

Some LVP products require the material to sit in the installation space for a set period at a set temperature range. Some explicitly do not. Others set conditioning requirements for the room rather than the material. Follow what the product says, and note that many instructions also set a service temperature range the space has to stay within after the floor is down.

3. Inspect the substrate

The subfloor has to be clean, structurally sound, stable, dry and flat enough for the product. Sweep and vacuum thoroughly — grit under a floating floor telegraphs and crunches. Fix squeaks and movement now, because the finished floor will not.

4. Moisture

Concrete slabs can pass moisture into a floor assembly long after they look dry, and crawlspaces and basements add their own conditions. Manufacturers set moisture requirements and test methods for their products, and some require a specific vapor retarder over concrete. Test rather than assume, and match the remedy to what your product asks for.

5. Trim, doors and jambs

You have two options at the perimeter: remove the base trim and reinstall it after the floor is in, or leave it and cover the gap with quarter round or shoe molding. Removing and reinstalling generally looks cleaner; adding shoe is faster.

Door casings and jambs are almost always undercut rather than scribed around. Lay a scrap of flooring (plus underlayment if used) next to the jamb, rest the jamb saw on it, and cut so the plank slides underneath with clearance.

6. Plan the rows before the first row

Divide the usable width of the room by the plank face width. The remainder is what your last row will be — and if that remainder is very small, you will be finishing the job with a sliver of plank along a wall, where it is both hard to lock in and easy to see.

The fix is to rip the first row narrower so the first and last rows come out closer to equal. Doing that costs a few minutes at the start. Discovering the problem at the opposite wall costs the whole last row.

7. Expansion gaps

A floating floor has to be able to move. That means clearance at every wall, cabinet, island, post, pipe and fixed object the floor runs up against. The size of that clearance is set by the product instructions — you will encounter values such as 1/4, 5/16 and 3/8 inch, and some products call for more in larger areas.

Use spacers so the gap stays consistent while you work, and check that the trim you plan to use is wide enough to cover it. More in LVP expansion gaps explained.

8. Underlayment, if your product uses it

Many LVP products ship with an attached pad and prohibit anything additional underneath. Others are installed over a separate underlayment or a vapor retarder over concrete. It is a product-specific decision, covered in do you need underlayment under LVP?

9. Install the planks

Start along the longest straight wall unless the layout says otherwise, with the tongue or groove oriented as your instructions specify. Set your spacers, lay the first row with the cut edge to the wall, and check the row is straight before committing to it — every row after it inherits that line.

Lock each plank per the system on your product. Click-lock profiles differ: some angle in on the long edge and drop-lock the short edge, others angle both. Force is not the tool here. If a joint will not close, back out and check for debris or a damaged edge rather than hitting it harder.

Work out of several cartons at once to mix shade and pattern variation, and set aside any damaged or badly off-color planks rather than installing them in a visible area.

10. End joints and stagger

End joints in adjacent rows need to be offset. How far is a product requirement — some instructions set a minimum offset distance, some set a proportion of plank length, and some add a rule about how often a pattern may repeat across rows. There is no universal number, so use the one your product gives.

Avoid the two patterns that look wrong regardless of the spec: a repeating staircase of joints marching diagonally across the room, and clusters of joints that nearly line up. Dry-lay a few rows ahead if the pattern is getting away from you, and keep the offcut from the end of a row for the start of a later one when it meets the offset requirement.

11. Transitions

Transitions handle changes in flooring type, changes in height and, on some products, breaks required in long continuous runs or between rooms connected by a narrow doorway. Check whether your product sets a maximum area or run length without a transition — ignoring that requirement is a common warranty problem.

12. The last row

Measure the remaining width at several points along the wall — rooms are rarely perfectly parallel — and scribe the last row to what the wall actually does, minus the required gap. A pull bar closes the final joints where a tapping block will not fit.

13. Trim, thresholds and final inspection

Reinstall the base trim or install the shoe molding, fastening it to the wall and never through the flooring. A floating floor pinned by trim, a heavy fixed object, or a transition screwed through it cannot move, and that is what produces peaking and buckling later.

  • Walk the floor and listen for hollow or flexing areas that indicate a low spot underneath.
  • Check every joint is fully closed, with no lipping between planks.
  • Confirm perimeter clearance survived at walls, cabinets, pipes and posts.
  • Confirm nothing fastens through the floor.
  • Verify transitions sit flat and let the floor move.
  • Clean per the manufacturer's instructions and note which cleaners are prohibited.
  • Keep leftover planks from the same lot for future repairs.
