LVP Expansion Gaps Explained
An expansion gap is the clearance left between the floor and everything fixed around it. It is the cheapest part of the installation and the one most often shortchanged.
What an expansion gap is
A floating LVP floor is not fastened or glued to the substrate. The planks lock to each other and the whole field sits loose on the subfloor. That assembly expands and contracts slightly with temperature and, depending on the core type, with humidity. The perimeter gap is the room the floor needs to do that without pushing against something solid.
What happens without it
A floor with nowhere to go pushes back. In practice that shows up as planks lifting along a wall or a seam (peaking), the field bowing upward in the middle (buckling), joints separating elsewhere as the floor is forced out of position, and doors that start catching. These are typically installation issues rather than product defects, which is why manufacturers are specific about perimeter clearance in their warranties.
Why there is no single correct number
You will commonly encounter requirements of 1/4 inch, 5/16 inch and 3/8 inch, and some products specify more, scale the gap with room size, or state it as a proportion of the run. The right value for your floor is the one printed in your product's installation instructions. Anyone who tells you a single number is universally correct for LVP is guessing on your behalf.
Where clearance is required
Not just at walls. Anywhere the floor meets something that will not move with it.

| Cabinets, islands, fixed furniture | Treat as walls. Floors that run under a cabinet toe kick still need clearance, and heavy fixed objects should not pin the field. |
| Door jambs and casings | Undercut the jamb and run the plank underneath with clearance — the casing hides it. |
| Transitions and thresholds | The profile must cover the gap without fastening through the floor. |
| Pipes and penetrations | Drill oversized per your instructions and cover with a split escutcheon or pipe collar. |
| Stair nosings, hearths, posts | Clearance behind the trim piece, and nothing fastened through the plank. |
Large and connected areas
Many LVP products set a maximum continuous area or run length before a transition is required, and some increase the perimeter gap as the run gets longer. Narrow connections — a hallway feeding two rooms, a doorway between open spaces — are exactly where those limits matter, because a long floor pushing through a pinch point has very little room to distribute movement. Check your product's stated limits before deciding to run the floor continuously through the house.
Trim coverage
The gap is meant to be hidden, not filled. Base trim, quarter round or shoe molding fastens to the wall and floats over the floor. Do not caulk the floor to the wall, do not fill the gap with sealant unless your product specifically calls for it in a wet area, and do not nail trim down through the planks.

The expansion gap reduces the width you actually cover with plank, which changes your row count and your last-row width.
