LVP Layout Calculator
Plan your LVP rows before installation. Enter the room width, plank width and required expansion gap to see the natural final-row width and an optional balanced layout.
Room width
Measure the room in the direction across the plank rows — perpendicular to the direction the planks will run. If planks run lengthwise down a room, enter the room width from the starting wall to the opposite wall.
Plank and expansion gap
Enter the actual plank face width, for example 7.2, 9 or 9.4 in. Verify it in the product specifications or by measuring a plank. FloorGauge does not fill in a plank width.
Minimum row width
Enter the room width, plank width and required expansion gap to see your row layout.
FloorGauge calculators provide planning measurements based on the dimensions you enter. Verify room measurements, plank dimensions, expansion requirements and minimum row-width requirements in the flooring manufacturer's instructions before installation. Actual field conditions may require layout adjustments.
Planning the first and last row
Why check the last row before starting
Starting with a full plank at one wall decides what is left at the opposite wall. Checking that width first avoids discovering a very narrow strip after most of the floor is installed.
How to measure room width for plank layout
Measure across the plank rows, perpendicular to the direction the planks will run. This calculator works on row width, not plank end-joint staggering.
Why first and last rows may be balanced
Removing one full row from the middle and splitting the leftover width between the two end rows gives first and last rows of roughly equal width, which can look more even and avoid a fragile sliver.
Expansion gaps and manufacturer instructions
Expansion requirements differ by product and installation method. Use the gap stated in your installation instructions rather than a general rule of thumb.
What to do if walls are not parallel
Measure the layout width at several points. If the width changes across the room, plan the first row against the measurement that gives workable widths at both ends, and expect to scribe the rip.
Connected rooms and doorways
Rows continuing through a doorway into another room carry the same layout with them. Check the full run before committing to the first row.
