LVP Transitions and Doorways

Doorways and transitions are decided before the first row goes down, not when you reach them. Where the floor stops, how it meets the next surface and how the trim is fastened all depend on your product's instructions and the floors on either side.

Plan doorways before you start, not when you reach them

Doorways determine the direction planks run, where a run stops, and whether a plank ends up as an awkward sliver in an opening. Walk the job first: mark every doorway, note what flooring is on the other side of each one, and decide where the LVP will continue and where it will end.

Does every doorway need a transition?

No — and equally, it is not true that a floating floor can run through every doorway indefinitely. Many products set a maximum continuous run or a maximum continuous area before a transition is required, and many set requirements for narrow connections such as doorways and hallways. Those figures are product-specific.

So the answer for your job comes from three things: what your installation instructions require, whether the adjacent surface is a different flooring type or height, and whether the opening is narrow relative to the connected areas.

Transition types and where each is used

Height changes

Adjacent floors are rarely the same thickness. Before choosing a profile, measure the actual finished-height difference at the opening rather than assuming it from product specs — the substrate underneath may not be level across the doorway either.

  • Measure the finished height of both floors at the opening, not in the middle of the rooms.
  • Confirm the door still clears the profile through its full swing.
  • Check that the profile seats flat rather than bridging a dip in the substrate.
  • Consider trip hazard and appearance for a difference that a reducer cannot fully resolve.

A floating floor has to stay free to move

The point of perimeter clearance is that the field of the floor can move as a unit. Any fastener that passes through the planks, or any trim that clamps the floor down against the substrate, defeats that — and the resulting peaking, gapping or joint separation often shows up rooms away from the cause.

Transition systems vary enough that there is no single correct installation method. Read the instructions for the specific profile you bought, and check them against your flooring manufacturer's requirements — see LVP expansion gaps explained for what the clearance is protecting.

Cutting flooring tightly around a jamb and casing looks worse and removes the clearance the floor needs. The usual approach is to undercut the jamb and casing so the flooring slides beneath with clearance remaining, hidden by the trim above it.

  • Measure your actual flooring thickness, including anything permitted beneath it.
  • Add the clearance your instructions require, then set the cut height from that total.
  • Use a scrap plank — plus a scrap of any underlayment — as the guide for the cut.
  • Test-fit a piece before cutting every jamb in the house.
  • Cut only as deep as needed; an oversized undercut shows as a shadow line under the casing.

There is no universal jamb-cut height, because it is a function of your specific floor assembly. Measure it rather than repeating a number from another project.

Long runs and connected areas

Large open plans, long hallways and rooms connected through narrow openings are where continuous-run limits matter most. A hallway that connects two large rooms is a narrow neck in a much bigger floating field, and some manufacturers treat those connections specifically.

  • Add up the full connected area and the longest continuous dimension, not room by room.
  • Identify narrow connections between larger areas.
  • Check your instructions for maximum run, maximum area and any narrow-opening requirement.
  • Plan where transitions will fall so they land in doorways rather than mid-room.
