Tools for Installing LVP Flooring
Most LVP installations are done with measuring and layout tools, a way to cut the planks cleanly, a small set of installation aids, something to undercut door jambs, basic prep tools and protective gear. The specifics depend on your product and your rooms.
The short answer
You need to be able to measure and mark accurately, cut planks straight and cut them around obstacles, ease planks together the way the locking system allows, hold the perimeter clearance, get under door casings, and clean and check the substrate. That is the whole list in plain terms — the sections below sort the actual tools into those jobs.
Tool selection is driven by the product as much as the room. A dense rigid-core plank and a flexible glue-down tile are not cut the same way, and locking systems differ in what you are permitted to strike.

Layout errors are more expensive than cutting errors, so this group does the most work on an LVP job.
- Tape measure
- Room dimensions, plank cuts, jamb heights and the running check as rows advance.
- Pencil or marking tool
- Marks that show on the plank face you are cutting and wipe off the finished surface.
- Straightedge
- Straight cut lines, and checking the substrate for high and low spots.
- Square
- Square cross-cuts and checking whether the room itself is square before the first row.
- Chalk line
- Useful for establishing a reference line across a large or out-of-square room.

The right cutting method depends on the product and on the cut being made. Test the method on a scrap piece before committing to a visible cut.
- Utility knife
- Score-and-snap works on some flexible products and thinner cuts. Rigid-core planks generally do not respond well to it.
- Flooring / LVP cutter
- A shear-style cutter makes fast, dust-free straight cross-cuts. Capacity varies by plank thickness and width.
- Jigsaw
- Curves, pipe cutouts, vent openings and irregular shapes.
- Circular saw
- Long rip cuts down the plank length, typically with the plank supported and the face protected.
- Miter saw
- Clean, repeatable cross-cuts, especially useful when cutting many planks to the same length.
- Oscillating multi-tool
- Trimming in tight spots and finishing cuts that a larger saw cannot reach.
Installation aids
Installation
- Tapping block
- Distributes force away from the locking edge when the manufacturer permits tapping planks together.
- Pull bar
- Closes joints at walls and in the last row where a block will not fit.
- Spacers
- Hold the perimeter clearance at the walls while the rows go in.
- Rubber or dead-blow mallet
- Used with a block, not against the plank, where the installation method calls for it.
- Knee pads or a kneeling pad
- Practical rather than optional on a full-room install.

- Oscillating multi-tool
- The common way to undercut door casings and jambs so flooring can pass beneath.
- Jamb saw
- Purpose-built for undercutting; worth it on a large job or many doorways, rarely on one room.
- Pry bar
- Removing base trim intact so it can go back down afterwards.
- Trim tools
- Nail set, finish nailer or hand-nailing kit for reinstalling base and quarter round.

Floor prep
Floor prep
These come out before the flooring does, and their use depends entirely on what your substrate check turns up.
- Straightedge
- The single most useful prep tool: it tells you whether you have a prep problem at all.
- Scraper
- Adhesive residue, drywall mud, paint drips and other debris left on the substrate.
- Shop vacuum and dust control
- The substrate has to be clean, and prep work makes dust.
- Patch tools
- Trowel or broad knife for filling low areas and defects with an appropriate patching product.
- Mixing equipment
- A drill and paddle sized for the patch or leveler you are using, mixed to the product's ratio.
- Grinder
- Only where a high spot or a residue genuinely calls for it, with dust control appropriate to the material.

Protection and comfort
- Eye protection whenever you are cutting.
- Hearing protection when running power saws, especially indoors.
- Dust protection suited to the task and the material being cut or ground.
- Knee protection — an LVP install is hours of floor time.
- Gloves where handling cut plank edges or prep materials calls for them.
Match protection to what you are actually doing. Cutting a few planks outdoors and grinding a slab indoors are different exposures, and the product data sheets for patching and leveling materials list their own handling requirements.
Tools you probably don't need for every LVP job
A homeowner doing one or two rooms does not need a professional flooring kit. Before buying, ask whether the project actually creates the condition the tool solves.
- Specialty flooring cutter — convenient, but a miter saw or a careful score-and-snap may cover a small job.
- Large grinder — only if your substrate has high spots or residue that genuinely require grinding.
- Professional dust extraction — scaled to the amount of cutting and prep involved.
- Jamb saw — hard to justify for a handful of doorways an oscillating tool can handle.
- Laser level — helpful on big or complex layouts, unnecessary on a straightforward rectangular room.
Tools worth having before you start
The tools that prevent problems are the ones used before the first plank goes down: a tape measure, a square, a long straightedge and the spacers that hold your clearance. Add to those the cutting method your product calls for and whatever your locking system permits for easing planks together.
- A straightedge long enough to check your substrate properly.
- A square, and an honest check of whether the room is square.
- Spacers sized to the clearance your instructions specify.
- The cutting setup your product and cuts require, tested on a scrap.
- The tapping block, pull bar or alternative your locking system actually allows.
